jacque.s schnee, the narcissist; whitley the golden child and winter / weiss, the black sheep - in depth headcanon of jacquesâ dismantling and pitting of his children against each other in order to further his own wants and gain his nsupply  ( ft. enabling drunkard mother, willow schnee. )
what is a narcissist and what makes jacquesâ one?
according to the dsm v, the main signs or traits of narcissistic personality disorder ( dubbed as the seven deadly sins of narcissism by us psychiatrists hotchkiss and james f. masterson ) are as follows : shamelessness, magical thinking, arrogance, envy, entitlement, exploitation and bad boundaries.  narcissists ; when concerning their children, do not see them as individuals with a sense of autonomy and self agency, but as extensions of the narcissist themselves.  a doll, a plaything, to do what the narcissist wants without defiance or personal input.  itâs shown in the key traits of the disorder ; they donât respect their childrenâs boundaries or personal choices, but see those choices as personal slights against themselves, expect subservience and obedience without question and often have highly unrealistic expectations.  nothing is good enough, and to try can only bring emotional pain and harm because it traps the children in an abusive cycle of guilt, shame, hope, and hurt.
jacques vs his black sheep ; weiss and winter.
jacques has countless examples of this - most notably, his actions in volume 4 against weiss, and were hinted at long before then.  one of the first instances we have of jacques presence in canon material ( previous only to weiss mentioning that his anger made for a very unpleasant childhood, ) is him cutting off weiss for not answering his phone call.  a rather disproportionate response to your child exercising some freedom - which is the worst sin in a narcâs eyes.  weiss is an extension of jacques, and yet at every turn sheâs defied him, albeit in small ways.  she didnât want to go to the atlas academy, she refused to answer his phone calls, sheâs not bowing to his demands.  so he hurts her where he knows it will matter for her continued independence, free of his control.  the money.
then enter winter ; who has been through this before.  the moment she left the household and joined the atlesian military, she betrayed jacques.  she chose the â enemy â over him, and again, that is the worst sin in his eyes because instead of seeing winter growing into a mature woman who is capable of making her own decisions and being happy or proud of her, he sees betrayal of all he has â given her. â  so winter gives weiss quite possibly the most important advice she will need to escape jacquesâ narcissistic web of abuse and manipulation ; that weiss has a choice.  children of narcs donât have choices, they have orders and punishment if they donât do what the narc wants.  but winter gives weiss that choice and lays out both the terms plainly and openly, without judgement which is exactly what her sister needed.  go back to jacques, and be in his favour for however long it may last ; or forge her own path of independence and eventual freedom of his rule and restrictions.  weiss makes her choice and for the rest of the volume, it gains her the independence she craved.
until volume four.  jacques preyed on the fear and worry that everyone is feeling post the grimm attack, and preys on peopleâs perceptions of him being a caring father, coming to rescue his youngest daughter from the harm that could befall her.  heâs bringing her home, where itâs safe, like a good father should.  but itâs lies, in truth jacques is bringing weiss back to where she has no independence or support network.  when weiss finally challenges this post the concert after party, jacques reacts with abusive words and then finally, physical violence.  abuse of his child, who has gone against everything he needs to see her to be ; an extension of himself and a perfect doll who should have no thoughts or personality.  just there to follow his unrealistic and ever changing whims, and then be punished when she inevitably canât ; as the black sheep children of narcs often are.
jacques, and his golden child whitley.
now, golden child may sound like an insult.  it often is, when used by other siblings because theyâre being favoured by the parent instead of being treated equally and itâs unfair.  but for whitley, this position is just as harmful as weiss and winterâs position as the black sheep once they crossed their father.  whitley is still prime for psychological manipulation and abuse, an extension of his father and used against weiss like some sick game of chess.  healthy parents want their children to form a close relationship, to be actual siblings who will be there for each other and love and care for each other.  jacques doesnât want that - he wants whitley at his side, right where he can be controlled and manipulated, and a spy on weiss.  he wants his children fighting against each other for his approval because that fulfils jacques ego and gives him that nsupply.
whitley is not an asshole, or a villain - he is an emotionally abused child who is stuck in the position his father has so cleverly put him in, as the golden child against his sisters.  he understands that to stay relatively safe, itâs easier to go along with what jacques wants, because heâs seen what happens when jacques is defied ; in what happened to weiss and winter.  his emotional connection to his father is what makes him prime for the abuse, and his lack of support network with his sisters due to jacques meddling and manipulation, ensures he then canât escape that abuse.
jacques and his enabling wife, willow.
every narc has an enabler, someone who through inaction, allows them to commit abuse and get away with perpetuating it.  willow is jacques enabler - and her status as a victim of his manipulation and abuse doesnât erase that.  itâs awful that he married her just for the name, and her money.  itâs awful that the abuse lead to her own abuse of alcohol and enabling the abuse of her children, but it doesnât excuse exactly that.  willowâs responsibility as a mother is to protect her children, and what they needed protection from was her husband.  due to her alcohol abuse and general neglect, willow enabled the abuse of winter, weiss and whitley through simply not being there.  she is not an active participant, but she is not trying to stop it either, and that is reprehensible.
conclusion.
jacques is possibly the best example of narcissistic parenting and abuse in rwby, and i am really hoping that all three of the schnee siblings work together to form a support network and take their father down.  and that if willow ever does show up, that they realize she does not deserve their forgiveness, and her implicit complicity in the abuse is realized too.
#*âđšâwinter s. Â / Â headcanon.#abuse /#child abuse /#long post /#aaaaa this got so long#but i had so many thoughts#AND I HAD TO DEFEND MY SON !!!!#he's as much a victim of abuse#as weiss and winter#and now jacques needs to burn in a fire#and willow isnt innocent either !!!!#me here with the hot tea : drink up bitches
